Three-dimensional (3D) nonwovens could boost the applications of electrospun fibers. In this a novel method will be presented based on the self-assembly of short electrospun leading to macroscopic nanofiber nanofiber sponges. The functionality of 3D nonwovens is controlled by the choice of materials used for electrospinning and by postprocessing treatment. Applications of 3D nonwovens will be discussed regarding applications in microbial fuel cells and in oil-water separation.
