This talk will describe our recent interests in quantifying and controlling molecular defects in polymeric networks.  The modification of polymer networks via photo-induced insertion of monomers into network chains will be described.  The substrate scope of this photo-growth process will be discussed, along with strategies for directed gel growth.  The combination of the photo-growth method with chemical methods for analysis of network structure and topology will also be described.  Taken together, the results will outline the effects of network reshuffling and chain growth on network topology, and provide strategies for controlled, reversible incorporation or removal of molecular level topological defects.
