This paper will describe laboratory surface science measurements on desorption from model icy grain mantles promoted by photons and low energy electrons. A simple model will be presented to highlight the importance of electron-promoted desorption in dense environments as a means of sustaining a gas phase population of species that would normally be considered to have completely frozen out. The role of hydrogen bonding in supporting efficient electron-promoted desorption will be discussed.
