Millions of people around the world are exposed to arsenic contamination on a daily basis. This constant exposure to arsenic can cause a variety of health problems affecting the skin, kidneys, and liver. Recently a study has shown the correlation between very low levels of arsenic and an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. Arsenic occurs in some natural waterways through leaching of arsenic based minerals, the semiconductor industry along with the production of wood preservatives can also lead to wastewater contaminated with arsenic. We have synthesized several ZnFe layered double hydroxide materials by changing the ratios of the zinc to iron. These materials have very high capacities for arsenic and are capable of removing arsenic from a variety of aqueous solutions. This paper will discuss how the capacities of these materials change by varying the ratio of zinc to iron, we will also be showing the results of treating industrial wastewater and natural water sources with these materials.
