The synthesis of novel porous covalent polymers is becoming an increasingly important area of research. Specifically, our group is focused on using crosslinkable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their precursors.  PAHs are of interest for their photo- and electrochemical properties, as well as their inherent self-assembly behaviors.  Theoretical studies have indicated that porous materials containing large aromatic surfaces could potentially open up new avenues for gas storage, (e.g., hydrogen or methane) and separations.  This presentation will discuss several new porous materials constructed from large, conjugated organic molecules and the characterization of their void spaces by micropore analysis and gas sorption.
