Fluorescent molecular logic gates have been developed with potential applications toward neuronal imaging. The three-input AND gates are designed to function within glutamatergic vesicles which copackage glutamate and zinc. A fluorescence output results only when the sensor binds glutamate, binds zinc, and undergoes the pH change associated with exocytosis (pH 5 to 7.4). An 11-fold fluorescence enhancement of the sensor-glutamate-zinc complex was obtained with exocytotic pH conditions.
