Oxidized phospholipids are a class of lipids which typically contain a saturated lipid chain at the sn-1 position and an unsaturated lipid that has been oxidatively cleaved at the sn-2 position. Oxidized phospholipids are implicated in atherogenesis, the formation of plaques on artery walls. Early detection of oxidized phospholipids in blood could lead to early diagnosis of atherosclerosis, a disease which is often asymptomatic in its early stages. We present methods for the detection of oxidized phospholipids using fluorescent sensors. The sensors are composed of a hydrophobic receptor for binding to the saturated lipid chain and a fluorophore bearing an aldehyde recognition group to achieve a fluorescent response to the aldehyde of the oxidized phospholipid.
