The design and testing of a microfluidic Paper Based Analytical Device, inspired by m-PAD devices by the Whitesides group, based on lateral flow assay designs is being developed for the purpose of detecting and identifying antibodies in serum from sheep exposed to Bluetongue Virus and/or EHDV.  The method uses anti-Bluetongue and Anti-EHDV antigens that are covalently bound to the paper cellulose structure using gluteraldehyde crosslinking to chitosan.  Detection of the antibody-antigen reaction is done by BCIP/NBT color reactions or using gold microsphere linked antibodies.   Initial design research was done using BSA and anti-BSA to mimic the actual target antibody/antigens.
