A combination of colorimetric and fluorescent detection methods would enhance the ability to accurately and quantitatively diagnose cancer. The focus of this research is to investigate the potential of a color sensing polythiophene in conjugation with fluorescent quantum dots to assess the presence and aggression of prostate cancer. Nine different sizes of quantum dots were synthesized with maximum emission fluorescence peaks ranging from 525 to 575 nm (blue to yellow fluorescence). Single stranded DNA was attached to the quantum dots and further research will work on the addition of the polythiophene. This complex is a model for using an RNA aptamer to detect the presence of the prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) found on prostate cancer cells. The color change when binding occurs between the RNA aptamer and PSMA will be an indicative sign of prostate cancer.
