Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) can effectively reinforce composites due to their interesting thermal and mechanical properties. One drawback in the production of CNF is the high energy consumed during fiber deconstruction. Pretreatment of the raw material is thus required to reduce energy demands. Here we propose an alternative to the conventional pretreatment strategies to produce CNF. Using a novel approach to deliver chemicals to the cellulosic matrix the reduction of the energy consumption for the fibrillation of pulp was achieved. Bleached and unbleached fiber suspensions were treated with two different formulations that provided enhanced chemical delivery. An important reduction in energy consumption was determined. The CNF and respective nanopapers obtained were analyzed and characterized by different techniques and are discussed in light of the pretreatment strategy used.
