The impact of cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO2) on plants has been investigated using various physiological and biochemical assays; however, structural analysis of native plant tissues has not been reported yet. Infrared microspectroscopy (FTIR-IMS) was applied in the structural analysis of intact root xylem of rice (Oryza sativa L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings exposed to nCeO2 suspensions (0, 62.5, 125, 250 and 500 mg L-1). Principal component analysis (PCA) was also employed to reveal spectral differences between nCeO2 treatments. Results demonstrated notable changes in the region of the spectra around 1696-1792 cm-1 for all seedlings. PCA afforded the clustering of 0 and 62.5 mg nCeO2 L-1 treatments in rice and wheat and 0 and 500 mg nCeO2 L-1 treatments in barley, which were distinctly separated from the rest of their respective treatments. PCA showed that score loadings contained major peaks at 1744 or 1760 cm-1 for primary PC and 1728 cm-1 for secondary PC. FTIR-IMS and PCA techniques illustrated that nCeO2 induced modifications in the chemical makeup of the root xylem of cereals.
