Spatial orientation and separation of the donor-acceptor units play an important role in stabilizing the charge separated states of artificial photosynthetic supramolecular model compounds.1 Previously, we reported on donor-acceptor tetrads featuring bis ferrocene-azabodipy-fullerene entities.2 In these systems ferrocene (secondary electron donor) and fullerene (terminal electron acceptor) were separated 'distantly' and 'closely' with respect to the central azabodipy. In these tetrads we were able to differentiate and stabilize the charge separated states. However, it was difficult to establish electron transfer-hole transfer mechanism due to low molar absorptivity of ferrocenium cation formed during the sequential electron transfer steps. In order to overcome this issue, in the present study, we have replaced ferrocene with easily oxidizable phenothiazine entities that are known to provide a cation radical signal in the 600 nm range. The syntheses of these multi-modular donor-acceptor tetrads along with their X-ray, spectral, and electrochemical characterization will be presented.
