We developed a physical chemistry experiment to study kinetics using methylene blue (MB)�glucose�oxygen system (�blue bottle� experiment). The optimized MB�glucose solutions inside a syringe device were used to study the kinetics of oxidation of glucose in the presence of oxygen. The end of the reaction was determined easily by the color change of the solution, and the corresponding reaction was first orders with respect to the concentration of MB or sodium hydroxide. With the assistance of the computer and open source software, reaction schemes and rate constants were also investigated during the oxidation process. This experiment is suitable for high school students and entry level college students to establish a fundamental concept of reaction kinetics.
