Cyclopentanoid structures are ubiquitous throughout natural product isolates. A novel ring opening cascade to generate 2-carboalkoxy cyclopentenones, a competent Diels-Alder dienophilic moiety, will be discussed. These molecules are generated from bio-renewable succinic anhydrides and give a wide array of cyclopentenone molecules.
