Fluorine chemistry is one of the most rapidly developing areas in modern science. Since the time when high lipophilicity, chemical and thermal stability, and high biological activity of fluorine-containing molecules were found, many chemists have attempted to use fluorine chemistry to synthesize new compounds with applied properties. Fluorine-containing compounds are used for the production of liquid crystals and polymers in electronic components, non-wetting coatings and surfactants, agrochemicals and drugs. Nowadays about 25% of drugs and 30% of pesticides have either a fluorine atom or fluorine-containing functional group.Among the fluorine-containing molecules, those with a pentafluorosulfanyl (SF5) substituent occupy a special place. Such compounds have been attracting great interest over the last six decades since the first organic SF5-containing molecules were synthesized. The pentafluorosulfanyl group brings unique properties to organic compounds and often improves their biological activities because of the group`s high chemical and metabolic stability, significant lipophilicity, substantial steric effect, and low surface energy.1 However, the development of SF5 chemistry has always been quite slow primarily due to limited access to pentafluorosulfanyl-containing building blocks or convenient methods for their preparation.Recently, we have been able to develop several easily scalable methods for the synthesis of novel pentafluorosulfanyl-containing building blocks.
