Fingerprints play a major role in solving crimes. Since not all fingerprints found at crime scenes are recently deposited, methods to detect older prints are important. How the fingerprints are processed and developed can determine whether or not a print is detected. In literature studies, bought prepared reagents are used instead of the laboratory made reagents even though it had been determined that the laboratory made reagents are more efficient. A comparative study between reagents made in the laboratory and premade reagents purchased from various companies will be conducted by testing fingerprint development over time under various environmental conditions, such as temperature and different lighting. A depletion series will be used on a variety of porous substrates such as paper, fabric, cardboard, and wood. 2,2-dihydroxyindane-1,3-dione (ninhydrin); disodium 4-amino-5-hydroxy-3-[(E)-(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-6-[(E)-phenyldiazenyl]-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonate (Amido black); 1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO), and 2-[7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-3-yl]-1,3-dimethyl-1H-benzimidazolium methyl sulphate (Basic Yellow) will be used as the reagents for this study. Instrumentation such as the infrared spectroscopy (IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), or mass spectroscopy (MS) will be used to ensure the quality of the reagents made in the lab.
