Organic thin film bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices are fabricated from blends of donor conjugated materials (often a polymer or a small molecule) with fullerene derivatives. The HOMO-LUMO gap of the donor is often optimized to harvest light absorption at the maximum wavelength of solar emission by employing donor and acceptor units in conjugation. Other factors that contribute to a high energy conversion efficiency include balanced charge mobility in the p-type and n-type components, morphology control and high open circuit voltage, Voc, short circuit current, Jsc, and fill factor, FF.This presentation will report on the progress of the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium (VICOSC) in the preparation of new high efficiency light harvesting donor materials and the study of printing and encapsulation techniques for the optimization of devices. The translation of the results to printed large area flexible solar cells on indium-tin-oxide on polyethylene terephthalate films will be outlined. Good results depend on an integrated approach to design, synthesis and evaluation of materials together with deposition techniques and encapsulation from moisture and oxygen.
