RuS2 catalysts also containing Pt or Ir and supported on a high surface area mesoporous support, SBA-15, were prepared. The presence of a second metal (Pt, Ir) in RuS2/SBA-15 catalyst composition in terms of catalyst properties and catalytic response in hydrotreating reactions were discussed. To this end the catalysts were fully characterized and tested in simultaneous hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) reactions as well as in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of a biofuel model compound such as phenol. Characterization results reveal that, under the presence of noble metals, the dispersion of the RuS2 phase was not affected, the availability of hydrogen increased, and the RuS2 coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) were in a very sulfided ambient and their population increased; while the noble metals were poorly sulfided and underwent reduction upon reaction. Instead, RuS2 phase remained unaltered in simultaneous HDS+HDN, while it was partially covered by adsorbed oxygen and/or water, mainly in absence of noble metals, after the HDO reaction.The evaluation of HDN and HDS activity when both (dibenzothiophene) DBT and (quinoline) Q were present in the feed highlighted the high activity of the RuS2 phase in hydrotreating and the important role of Pt and Ir in the catalytic activity, bimetallic catalysts being more active, mainly that containing Pt. In general, the HDS reaction is hardly affected by the presence of Q molecules, with only the hydrogenation (HYD) sites being anyhow altered. HDN results improved in the presence of DBT, even showing high HDN conversion when Q was present in great quantities. Moreover, the incorporation of noble metals to RuS2 catalyst provoked a sharp increased in phenol conversion into O-free compounds, where the Ir containing catalyst was the most active in the HDO reaction.
