Thermophysical properties of ammonium based ionic liquids prepared using ion exchange method were determined and utilised for potential application. They were tested for applications in a solar cooker. The experiments were carried out during April 24, 2012 to May 18, 2012 at 22 o 33 ' N, 72 o 55 ' E. Characteristics like melting point, density, heat of fusion, heat of solid - solid transitions, specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity were used to determine the efficiency of ILs used as phase change materials (PCMs) in solar thermal applications. A significant delay time was observed on an average in achieving the highest temperatures inside the solar cooker. The ionic liquids extended the time required for achieving ambient temperature to a tune of around four hours. The efficiencies were then compared to propose the most suitable ionic liquid in different usable temperature ranges.
