Modification on the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is one of the approaches to suppress the charge recombination, improve electron injection and transportation, which results in enhancing the conversion efficiency of DSSCs. Here we present the effect of photoanode post-modification with small organic molecules on the performance of dye sensitized solar cell. The sensitized meso-porous TiO2 film on FTO (photoanode) was modified with small organic molecules by drop casting method and subsequently dried under stream of N2 ?gas. The modified and unmodified dye-sensitized TiO2 electrode (photoanode) and Pt-counter electrode were assembled into a sandwich type cell. An electrolyte solution containing I-/I3- as a redox couple was injected in between two electrodes and the device was sealed with glass. The electrical, optical characteristics, surface morphology, and charge transfer properties of interfaces of the device were characterized by UV-Vis spectrometer, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the current density-voltage characteristics. The modified devices showed increased photo-current which was resulted from the enhanced charge transfer through TiO2/dye/electrolyte compared to pristine device interface. Moreover the modified devices also showed enhancement in Voc, indicating suppression of charge recombination. As a result significant improvement of the overall power conversion efficiency of the DSSC device was observed.
