Herein, we report on TiO2-coated upconverting NaGdFxOy: Yb/Er hollow sphere as a bifuncational material for improving photo-conversion efficiency. A high surface area hollow sphere F-based upconverting NaGdFxOy: Yb/Er was synthesized successfully by the ion exchange. NaF and NH4F were as F resources, which avoid the hazardous HF. Meanwhile, hollow sphere with an average diameter of 420 nm will effectively increase the light absorption as the scatter layer. To reduce the contact resistance of hollow sphere NaGdFxOy:Yb/Er and TiO2 NPs, the TiO2 shell was coated on the hollow sphere NaGdFxOy: Yb Er to form the core/shell structure. Upon the addition of 8% core/shell NaGdFxOy:Yb Er/TiO2 hollow spheres into the TiO2 photoanode, the DSSC with the best performance was obtained.
