Fluorine combines with carbon and yields a variety of solid products as well as volatile fluorocarbons. Out of these, polycarbon monofluoride(CFx) is of commercial importance that is widely used as a high energy density cathode material in primary Lithium/CFx batteries, in addition to other applications.In this paper, the development of CFx from historical perspective to the present day will be briefly discussed. Fluorination of carbon is greatly affected by choice of carbon precursor and reaction conditions. We will attempt to describe the complexities of mass production of CFx.
