Solids in the form of new alloys, polymers, composites, and ceramics are frontier areas in chemistry. The ASM Foundation through their week long summer teacher workshops are providing resources in Materials Science that can easily be incorporated into a traditional chemistry course.During the one-week workshops, teacher participants learn the basics of Materials ScienceTechnology as taught at the high school level. They work hands-on with metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, and develop a greater appreciation for the importance of these materials to modern life. The teachers see how this heavily project-based course excites students to learn science concepts as they complete projects of personal worth to them. Whether teachers use the information and concepts as a basis for teaching their own MST course or merely infuse the concepts into an existing science or chemistry course to increase relevancy, they finish the week prepared to make some important instructional changes as a result of their participation.In 2013, 42 residential and commuter workshops were held throughout the United States and Canada.  This session will present a number of the experiments that can be incorporated into current chemistry courses. Information on summer 2014 workshops will be made available to attendees.
