Polymeric materials are pervasive in today's world. The unprecedented standard of living enjoyed by most citizens of the developed world is largely a consequence of the development of polymeric materials which occurred in the latter half of the last century. For most applications, polymeric materials must be flame retarded. Organohalogen compounds, particularly brominated aromatics, have been popular flame retardants. They are effective and readily available at modest cost. However, these compounds are stable, persist in the environment, tend to bioaccumulate, and may present hazards to human health. Because of these limitations, the use of these compounds is increasingly subject to restrictive regulations by governments around the world. Therefore, there is a strong need for the development of replacements that are effective, non-toxic and biodegradable. Condensation of D0P0 [9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenonthener-10-oxide], 4-aminoacetophenone and aniline affords 1,1-di(4-aminophenyl)-1-dopyl[6-oxido-6H-dibenzoxaphosphorin-6-yl]ethane. Treatment of this compound with a variety of phosphorous reagents provides phosphoramidates with good potential to function as effective flame retardants for polymeric materials.
