Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most expensive and prevalent cognitive disorders to plague the elderly population. Despite the prevalence of AD, the mechanism that causes the disease, namely the aggregation of A�42, is not fully understood. It is the endeavor of this project to synthesize synthetic mimics of polysaccharides found in GM1 gangliosides, specifically those containing glucose and galactose, for evaluation of their effect on A�42 aggregation. GM1 ganglioside is being studied because it can act as a seeding agent for the aggregation of A�42. Monomers, 2-(�-D-glucosyloxy)ethyl acrylamide (GlcEAm) and 2-(�-D-galactosyloxy)ethyl acrylamide (GalEAm), and homopolymers, poly(2-(�-D-glucosyloxy)ethyl acrylamide) (polyGlcEAm) and poly(2-(�-D-galactosyloxy)ethyl acrylamide (polyGalEAm) were synthesized using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization (RAFT polymerization). The monomers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, IR spectroscopy and ESI, and the homopolymers were characterized by 1H NMR or GPC.
