In this presentation I will discuss the in situ synthesis of block polymers for the direct formation of nanostructured materials useful in a variety of advanced applications. The key concept is the polymerization induced phase separation during block polymer formation using controlled polymerization processes. By controlling the constituents, a variety of materials with tunable domains sizes and chemical compositions can be achieved using this approach. In addition, we have demonstrated that a simple process starting from monomers, a difunctional chain transfer agent and initiator can directly give nanostructured materials in one step. Applications of these membranes and monoliths as separation media will be presented.
