Nanocelluloses are a new class of nanomaterials having fibrillar structures with one dimension in the nanometer range. They exhibit unique properties compared to micrometer-scale cellulosic fibers. In particular, they are characterized by a very large specific surface area, reactive surface of �OH groups, high strength and modulus, and low thermal expansion coefficient and gas permeability. Irreversible aggregates formation of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) after drying is a major drawback for NFC processing, transportation, and storage. This problem has been previously addressed by using either surface chemical modification (carboxymethylation) or salt addition (sodium chloride) strategy combined with freeze-drying. In our present work, we have developed an optimized a simple process to prepared dried NFC samples adsorbed with very small amounts of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Above a critical threshold of CMC addition, the dry NFC sample is fully redispersable in water. The properties of the water redispersed NFC have been studied by sedimentation tests, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and rheology measurements. Furthermore, the water redispersed NFC has been used to prepare thin films. The mechanical properties of the thin films have been characterized by tensile test using an Instron universal material testing machine.
