The primary goal of the Barry Chemistry Club is to promote interest and understanding of chemistry within the Barry University and surrounding community. We started with a pizza social to introduce faculty's ongoing research projects to new and current students. Throughout the year, we had guest speakers who talked about research and graduate school opportunities. We did peer tutoring for chemistry courses and volunteered to help with the department's high school science tournament. For community service, we did a beach cleanup picking up trash; we raised funds for the American Heart Association annual Heart Walk and Coins for Pure Water; we participated in the Martin Luther King Challenge Day helping high school students to prepare their college applications and find financial aid; we did a Christmas toy drive for HIV affected children. Chem Club members participated in the Girl Scout �Ms. Wizard Day� where 20 Girl Scouts came to campus for a day of science. We received a Community Interaction Grant (CIG) from ACS and visited six elementary schools where we presented chemistry demos to over 500 3rd and 4th graders. During National Chemistry Week we continued our traditional chemistry info table and sold various chemistry related items, and presented chemistry demos for children at the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Science. We also sponsored a scavenger hunt during NCW to find Avogadro, and for Mole Day we made ice cream using liquid nitrogen. For fundraising we sold test tubes with candy during Valentine's Day and each semester we sold lab supplies � safety glasses, goggles and notebooks. Students attended the ACS national meeting in New Orleans where they presented research posters and the chem club poster. At the end of each semester we had a luncheon for our physical sciences department.
