Phosphonates and phosphoric acid esters of poly(ethylene glycol) were successfully synthesized using various synthetic approaches. Phosphonic acids were synthesized by bromination of the PEG followed by the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction and hydrolysis of the ester whereas the phosphoric acid esters were prepared by direct phosphorylation of the hydroxyl group using phosphoryl chloride. All polymer products were characterized by NMR, FTIR, and mass spectrometry . The phosphate based PEG ligands were then covalently attached to the surface of Zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoparticles and ZrP nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin, an anticancer drugs. The encapsulation of the doxorubicin and successful modification of the surface was verified by powder X-Ray diffraction, FTIR, TGA, and electron microprobe.
