Tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine (PPy3) and tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (OPPy3) reacted with MII nitrates (M= NiII, CuII, ZnII) in simple one-pot procedures to yield the facial metal complexes [Ni(PPy3)(H2O)3](NO3)2, Cu(PPy3)(NO3)2, [Zn(PPy3)(H2O)3](NO3)2(H2O) [Ni(OPPy3)(H2O)3](NO3)2(H2O) , [Cu(OPPy3)(NO3)2(H2O)], and[Zn(OPPy3)(H2O)3](NO3)2(H2O). These complexes were characterized by IR and UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and 1H/31P NMR spectroscopy. X-ray crystallography showed that both the PPy3 and OPPy3 ligands coordinated in a facial N,N,N manner to the metal centers, leaving the phosphorus of the PPy3 ligand open to possible further bonding.  One of the nitrates in the complex Cu(PPy3)(NO3)2 exhibited an anisobidentate ?2 binding mode to the copper metal center, and was the only example in either series where this occurred; all other nitrates were bound in a monodentate fashion.
