Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous materials with metal oxide vertices and organic bridging ligands, are of interest to researchers due to their high internal surface areas and permanent porosity.1 MOFs could potentially be used as mobile hydrogen storage systems, cutting down on the bulk necessary for coolant. Four diarylacetylenes were synthesized with carboxylic acid moieties on each aryl group. The following organic linkers were synthesized: 4,4'-(1,2-ethynediyl)bis-benzoic acid (52% yield), 3,3'-(1,2-ethynediyl)bis-benzoic acid (98% yield), 6,6'-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)bis(2-naphthoic acid), 5,5'-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)bis(1-naphthoic acid)(70% yield). Melting points and NMR spectra (1H and 13C) have been recorded.
