The rate of electron injection from an organic active layer into an electrode is an important factor contributing to the efficiency of organic solar cells. Phthalocyanine (Pc) and perylenediimide (PDI) are popular materials for electron donor and acceptor, respectively, in organic photovoltaics due to their outstanding photophysical properties. As molecular-level heterojunctions, a series of Pc-PDI dyads with different functionalities were designed to study the process of dark electron injection at solar cell interfaces. Here is presented the synthesis of these dyads with different PDI bay-functional groups (H, SAr, and SO2Ar). To understand the behavior of long-lived charge separated state species on interface, the synthesized dyads were equipped with phosphonic acid anchor groups to be attached to conductive oxides (ITO, ZnO, TiO2, etc.) surfaces. Fluorescence quenching was observed for all three dyads in solution as an indication of charge separation. Studies of other spectroelectrochemical properties of these dyads both in solution and on surface will be reported.
