From ancient Egyptian fragrant ointments, to modern day fragrance and allure, the perfume industry is an ever present part of our society and profits from the fragrance and cosmetics industry have reached $95 million dollars globaby and are projected to reach $106 billion dollars by 2016. Through a series of extraction and synthesis reactions and employing several laboratory techniques, a variety of naturally existing chemical derivatives that produce an aroma have been obtained. Compounds obtained from these processes include sweet smelling esters such as methyl butyrate, aldehydes like vanillin and cinnamaldehyde and other essential oils including rose oil. Several perfumes were created from the combination of these derivatives with fragrances such as apple cinnamon, vanilla coconut, and rose vanilla. Spectral analysis, including infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were performed.
