The current report highlights the application of small peptides as building blocks for the development of smart multi-component nanomaterials. A facile bottom-up strategy for the synthesis of a small library of stimuli responsive smart organogelators has been proposed that is based on the predictive self-assembly of ultra short peptides. Our strategy allows the programmed self-organization of the components to form well defined nano-structures. Importantly, it was observed that the components can demonstrate a narcissistic self-sorting behavior. This self-assembling mechanism has been evaluated as a method for the efficient co-assembly of a donor-acceptor dual component organogel to model a simplified example of a supramolecular photo-conversion device. The proposed methodology that utilizes short peptide sequences to direct the programmed self-organization of molecules in a complex mixture may prove important in the development of multi-component smart nano-devices.
