This lecture describes how dynamic effects can be important in reactions involving carbene intermediates. Past and current research, particularly of the intervention of dynamics on the intermolecular reactions of halocarbenes with strained C-C pi bonds, will be discussed. Congratulations to Matthew Platz for his exceptional contributions to organic photochemistry and reactive intermediate chemistry that have earned him the 2014 James Flack Norris Award in Physical Organic Chemistry.
