Alkyl amines and related nitrogen-containing molecules are highly important compounds in a wide range of disciplines, including complex molecule synthesis, pharmaceutical development and materials science. We have been active in developing novel transition metal-catalyzed routes to such compounds using non-traditional starting materials. Several of the new methods will be discussed, including the development of copper-catalyzed conditions for the C-alkylation of nitroalkanes using simple alkyl halide electrophiles and the mono-alkylation of primary amides using alkyl boronates
