Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are anion-exchange materials expressed by the general formula, [M2+1-xM3+x(OH)2][An-x/n?mH2O], where M and A denote a metal atom and an anion, respectively. They are expected to be fire-retarding materials for polymers, since they release water and absorb heat upon decomposition of their layers. In this study, mono butyl phosphate (MBP) was first intercalated into LDH layers containing Mg-Al, Zn-Al, or Ca-Al. Then, the LDHs were melt-mixed with isotactic polypropylene (PP).  presents derivative thermogravimetric (TGA) curves of PP and various LDHs, which demonstrated that the layer structure of LDHs treated with MBP is maintainable to high temperature (>300 oC). The thermal properties of PP/LDH composites were examined by TGA in air environment. In the , onset temperature of the weight loss shifted to higher temperature upon incorporation of LDH. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the PP/LDH composites becomes significantly superior in thermal stability to neat PP only by the addition of 5 wt% LDH.
