There is strong interest in radioactive 166holmium nanoparticles in radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. The synthesis of 165holmium iron garnet nanoparticles (HoIG) will be described. Upon neutron activation the holmium in the garnet emit �- particles for degradation of tumor tissue and ? radiation for tumor imaging. These garnet nanoparticles were introduced into polymer solutions and electrospun to produce radiotheraputic bandages which can be applied directly on top of a tumor site. Garnet nanoparticles dispersed in poly-acrylonitrile (PAN) solutions were electrospun and resulted in free standing, nonwoven fiber mats that were characterized by PXRD, SEM, TEM, and neutron activation.
