Multifunctional fibrous scaffolds, which combine the capabilities of biomimicry to the native tissue architecture and shape memory effect (SME), are highly promising for the realization of functional tissue-engineered products with minimally invasive surgical implantation possibility. In this study, we presented a thermo-responsive and biomimetic tissue engineering scaffold with SME functionality prepared by electrospinning poly(D,L-lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) (PLMC). Morphology, thermal-mechanical properties as well as the shape-memory properties of the nanofibrous PLMC were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. And also, the in vitro biological efficacy was evaluated. It was found that the SME-capable nano?brous PLMC scaffolds exhibited excellent shape recovery ratio of Rr > 94% and shape fixity ratio of Rf > 98% under stress-controlled programming, and macroscopically demonstrated a fast shape recovery (~10 s at 39�C) in the pre-deformed 2-D and 3-D configurations. Such scaffolds also supported outstanding osteoblast attachement, proliferation and bone formation relevant outcomes including ALP expression and hydroxyapatite-like mineral deposition. Taken together, current biomimetic nanofibrous PLMC scaffold integrated with desired functionalities including biodegradability, bone forming ability, and shape memory effect may be of great potential for achieving optimal outcomes in the course of scaffold-assisted bone repair and regeneration applications.
