The development of surface modification techniques for 'on-?demand' control of surface properties is essential in order to engineer modular surface platforms with a high degree of control over complexity, functionality, and responsiveness to external stimuli. Most examples of surface modification are irreversible; however, 'on-?demand' reversible functionalization of surfaces would enable strategies such as 'catch-?and-?release' and 'reusable' surfaces important for advances in biosensors, self-?healable materials, antifouling coatings, etc. We have synthesized pH-responsive, reversible hydrazone linkages as substituents on polymer brush surfaces via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and post-polymerization modification (PPM). We show that surface properties can be reversibly controlled via hydrazone reactions, and we further investigated the kinetics of hydrazone transamination reactions on the brush surface to better tailor the efficiency of our system. The kinetics of the exchange reaction were investigated under various conditions where temperature, acid concentration, and aldehyde identity were varied. The hydrazone exchange reactions were monitored by gATR-FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and ellipsometry.
