We have recently developd a novel bimetallic system with the general structure of Pd@Pt, where the Pt is deposited as a conformal, ultrathin overlayer on the surface of Pd nanocrystal pre-synthesized with a well-defined facet and a uniform size less than 10 nm. The Pt shell thickness could be precisely tuned from one to ten atomic layers to optimize the mass activity of Pt for a catalytic reaction. In addtion to the electronic coupling between Pd and Pt, this new system allows us to maximize the mass specific activity thanks to the enhanced area specific activity and the increased specific surface area for ultrathin shells of Pt. It also allows us to drastically reduce material cost owning to the use of a much less expensive metal in the core.
