Rich properties and functions of various nanomaterials make them appealing candidates in biomedical research. Their roles as medicine are highly dependent on potential toxicity effects in physiological environment. This talk will discuss ultra-small metal nanoclusters, composed of few atom gold and/or silver as metal core stabilized by a combination of monothiolates and dithiolates as ligand monolayer. The multi-dentate ligand-core bonding renders this type of nanomaterials novel properties and functions. Electrochemical studies of their redox activities will be discussed to address their behaviors in cellular transport and long term fate.
