Organometallic reactions of nitroxyl (HNO) are largely unknown due to the difficulty in generating free HNO and its rapid dimerization.  The deprotonated form of nitroxyl (NO-) is isoelectronic to molecular oxygen (O2), which reacts readily with certain d8 square planar metal complexes such as Vaska's complex. We hypothesize that HNO should react in a similar manner. The reactions of nitroxyl donors with transition metal compounds, including Vaska's complex, will be discussed and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
