Michael Crichton's Prey has been used as a tool in nanotechnology courses to discuss societal implications of the field by instructors at a variety of institutions. Since 2010, the instructors of an introductory to science fiction course and a nanoscience and nanotechnology course built upon commonalities between the courses in order to broaden and strengthen the students' experiences and understanding of societal implications of new technologies. The instructors created blended assignments that overlapped the common theme and allowed students to interact with those from the other course. The evolution of the blended assignments led to a service learning project with teams comprised of students from both courses. The presentation will include an evaluation of the assignments that can be transferred to other nanotechnology courses or other courses containing a service learning or blended learning component.
