Lyotropic liquid crystal phases are exceptional candidates for template-based nanomaterial syntheses [1] and promoting the assembly of nanomaterials into arrays.[2] We have recently shown that the normal lyotropic hexagonal columnar phase (H1) formed by Triton X-100� in water is an ideal template for the growth of gold nanostars with elongated thorns [3] that should be ideal candidates for SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) applications.[4] To elucidate the role of the lyotropic liquid crystal phase and chemical structure of the surfactant (ionic vs. neutral) we studied the synthesis of gold nanostars in one lyotropic liquid crystal template based on Triton X-45� and ionic CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) forming a lamellar phase (La).
