This talk outlines how the influence of Tom Greenbowe enabled a program of reform of instruction, curricula, and professional development within chemical education that includes the Science Writing Heuristic as a central feature. The SWH is both a robust mechanism for use with students and a way to introduce other faculty to how to structure their own inquiry laboratory programs. The SWH provides a particularly effective answer to the challenge of how to engage students in inquiry�to support them in engaging in John Dewey's goal of learning by inquiry done by �the controlled or directed transformation of an indeterminate situation� into a �unified whole.� Examples of particular cases for individual labs, a multi-year high school curriculum project, and professional development for K-12 and higher education will be provided. Work done in association with other UIC science departments, its Learning Sciences Research Institute and College of Education, and with Loyola University Chicago will be presented
