Titanium based alloys are commonly used in devices such as implants, bone plates, and hip replacements. The implant interface is a prime location for bacterial adhesion and growth, potentially leading to the formation of biofilms. Bacteria that grow within the biofilm are more resistant to immune responses and are harder to treat with antibiotics. Self-assembled monolayers can be used to modify and control surface properties. By modifying titanium substrates with antimicrobial properties, the initial adhesion of planktonic bacteria on the surface of the implants may be reduced. In this experiment, Astacidin 2, an antimicrobial peptide, will be attached to titanium alloy substrates via self-assembled monolayer linkage. Monolayer formation and antibiotic peptide adhesion was analyzed using Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy and Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Spectroscopy.
