Biofuels are being synthesized by thermally hydrocracking peanut oil, and ozonated peanut oil. Peanut oil is composed of long hydrocarbon chains bound to a triester; Hydrocracking alone cleaves the triester to produce long carbon chains (C15-C20) while ozonolysis and hydrocracking result in shorter alkanes (C6-C12). In both cases water is the resulting byproduct. Characteristics of the resulting products were investigated. Future plans include using solar energy to fuel the reaction.
