Gas hydrate formation kinetics is one of important criteria to implement successful offshore GHG storage in deep-sea sediments below hydrate formation zone. In this study, we investigated the effect of soil mineral surfaces (illite, nontronite, sphalerite, and kaolinite) on the formation kinetics of N2O and CO2 mixture (50:50) gas hydrate. The hydrate formation experiments were conducted by injecting mixture gas into the soil mineral suspensions in a 50 mL pressurized vessel at hydrate forming conditions (273.3 K and 30 bar). The formation kinetics of mixture gas hydrate was the fastest in illite suspension (142�102 min) and the order was followed by nontronite (193�174 min), sphalerite (210�188 min), pure water control (242�192 min), and kaolite (288�266 min). The addition of soil minerals accelerated the formation kinetics of mixture gas hydrate. This indicates that mineral surfaces could play a pivotal role of hydrate formation promoter by providing water adsorption and hydrate nucleation site. The results can provide fundament knowledge to understand the effect and role of marine environmental factors on mixture gas hydrate formation kinetics.
