In this work, four pesticides including carbofuran, ?-lindane, diazinon, and malathion, are selected as a representative of toxic industrial chemicals, i.e., carbamate, organochlorine and organophosphorous compounds. These model compounds were spiked onto common building materials including carpet, ceiling tile, glass, ceramic tile, vinyl floor tile, painted steel, and painted drywall. The vapour phase of contaminated building materials were sampled by Tenax TA tubes and analyzed on the Dynatherm ACEM 900 thermal desorption gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer system. The relationship between the initial surface concentrations of four pesticides on various building materials and the concentrations in the vapour phase was studied. The concentrations in the vapour phase were affected by the initial spiked surface concentration, the temperature, and the type of building material.  Toxic thansformation products such as isocarbofuran, a-lindane, 1,3,4,5,6-pentachlorocyclohexene (PCCH) and isomalathion were detected in the vapour phase of contaminated building materials. The amount of transformation products was also affected by the initial spiked surface concentration, the temperature, and the type of building material. The amount of transformation products increased with increasing initial surface concentrations and temperature. Toxic transformation products, a-lindane and PCCH, were detected in the vapour phase at 20 and 40o C and for all the building materials when ?-lindane was spiked. The vapour concentration of a-lindane and PCCH increased after the vapour concentration of formed plateaus which were still below the saturation concentration values.
